Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)
The plant has a tough stem and dark green leaves that are about 6-10 cm in length which clasp the stem at the base. The leaves are narrow, downy and feathery in appearance. It has white or pinkish flowers and flowers once a year. The plant is faintly aromatic.
Yarrow can be found growing naturally in meadows in most temperate regions throughout the world. It is native to Europe and Western Asia.
The aerial parts (parts that grow above the ground) are used medicinally.
Yarrow has many actions. It is a diaphoretic (promotes sweating), anti-inflammatory, spasmolytic (it breaks spasm), hypotensive (it lowers high blood pressure), haemostatic (stops or reduces internal bleeding), astringent (tightens mucous membranes and tissues, reducing secretions and bleeding) and bitter (stimulates digestive juices, thus increasing appetite). It also has a mild diuretic effect.
