Saw Palmetto (Sabal serrulata)
The shrub is a small palm that grows between 6 to 10 ft high with greenish-yellow leaves, which are large and grow in a fan-like pattern. The berries are globular, from 2-2.5 cm long and up to 3cm broad. They are black with a thin hard, but fragile outer layer covering a pale-brown, spongy pulp and a thin papery inner layer.
The shrub is native to North America and can be found growing in sand dunes along the Atlantic and Caribbean coasts.
The Berries of the plant are of medicinal importance.
Saw Palmetto has an excellent reputation for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy (BPH-prostate cancer). Clinical trials have shown that it is very effective at reducing the side effects of this disease and also for treating enlarged prostate. The berries are a diuretic (promotes the urine production) and also have tonic (strengthens the walls of the urinary tract) properties. It has uses as a sedative. The herb also has anabolic properties - it builds up the body tissues and promotes weight gain.
